Track competes at Husky Classic
|
The WSU track and field team will look to continue their strong team and individual performances this weekend at the Flotrack Husky Classic Indoor meet held at the Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle. The meet is a two-day event where the DMRs, 5ks and B section of the Vault will be contested Friday evening. The majority of the events will take place Saturday, and it looks to be a very competitive weekend.“This meet runs all day Saturday, and it is a long day but it is great competition,” Head Coach Rick Sloan said.
“It will give us a little bit of a preview of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in two weeks.” The meet primarily features Pac-10 teams and WSU looks to be very competitive, bringing their top performers for the main events.Jeshua Anderson will compete in the 400-meter, 60-meter hurdles and the men’s 4x400 relay team. Another Coug looking to dominate the competition is sophomore women’s high jumper Holly Parent.“For the most part, at a meet like this, we are looking to go and challenge ourselves and see if we are better than we were two weeks before,” Sloan said.
“We have people who haven’t competed before or have not competed in their primary events yet this year so that will be exciting to see who (has already made good) progress and adding the new people’s performances.” The Sixth Annual Track & Field News World and U.S. rankings show two current Cougars, Jeshua Anderson and Marissa Tschida. Anderson is listed 12th in the men’s 400-meter hurdles, and Tschida is listed third in the U.S. rankings for womens’ javelin.Yet, Anderson and Tschida are not focused on the rankings. They, along with the rest of the track and field team, are getting prepared for the upcoming meet where they are sure to see the best competition they have faced so far this season.

Track Splits Up, Finishes Strong in New York and New Haven
|
Fordham's men's and women's track and field teams split up over the weekend, with some going to the New Balance Collegiate Invitational, which traditionally attracts elite competitors from around the country and is held at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City, while the rest of the team competed at the Giegengack Invitational at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. The teams were pleased with their performances, especially given the divided team, and were pleased with the results the teams put out in every event.
"While the majority of the team raced at Yale this weekend, splitting up the team allowed everyone to run as competitively as possible," freshman Anisa Arsenault said."We divided and as a whole ran well," sophomore Julian Saad said. "We had great individual performances at both meets. Where in the past (to my knowledge) our team has scored primarily in the mid-distance areas, as well as a few other special areas depending on the year, this year we appear to be more balanced in all running areas."
The highlight of the New Balance Collegiate Invitational occurred when both senior Brian Schmidt and senior Kerri Gallagher set school records, both in the 800-meter run. Schmidt finished eighth, coming in at 1:50.98 to break Jim DiRienzo's 1977 school record of 1:51.1, while Gallagher finished sixth with 2:07.61, breaking Lauren Gubicza's 1992 school record of 2:10.76.Among the other Fordham competitors, the men's distance medley team of Schmidt, sophomore Sean Atkinson, sophomore John Cosgrove and junior Kevin Fitzgerald finished eighth with 10:06.11

Vols' Hunter SEC Track & Field Freshman of Week
|
Justin Hunter has made great strides with the University of Tennessee track team. A month into his first year, he's already making a name for himself in the long jump. The Vols' wide receiver has been named the SEC Track & Field Freshman of the Week for the second time this year.Hunter has participated in four meets with the Vols since he finished football season in the Music City Bowl, and already he is third on Tennessee's all-time list.
For the second time this season, University of Tennessee jumper Justin Hunter has been named the Southeastern Conference Track & Field Men's Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday. After earning the honor on Jan. 18, the Big Orange rookie collected kudos again this week after winning the Championship division of the long jump on Feb. 4 at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York City. Hunter carded a top mark of 25 feet, 10 1/4 inches to win his third consecutive competition to open the 2011 indoor campaign.
While the measurement was shy of his career best of 26-1 1/2 that he recorded at the Penn State National meet on Jan. 28, he managed to finish ahead of a pair of competitors who rank in front of him on the NCAA and SEC lists this season. He currently stands at No. 7 nationally and No. 4 in the SEC.The only freshman long jumper in the country who is automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship meet thus far, Hunter is UT's freshman record-holder in that event and rates No. 3 on UT's all-time indoor performers list after only four meets.

Boys Track & Field: Anderson eases way to high jump title
|
An event like the high jump can drag on for well over an hour at a track & field meet, creating plenty of down time for the competitors. Shoreham-Wading River senior Erik Anderson prefers to avoid watching the other jumpers as he waits for his turn, choosing instead to sit with his headphones on, focusing on his next jump.“If I start looking at other people I start thinking in my head and I psyche myself out,” Anderson said.At the small school county championship Monday night at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood, Anderson had little trouble securing his first indoor county title.
He made four jumps on the night, cleared them all and took home the title with a top jump of 6 feet, 1 inch. Only one other competitor cleared 6 feet, and when he missed on 6-01, Anderson called it a night.Having cleared 6-04 1/4 earlier this season at the Stanner Games, Anderson already had his qualifying standard, which will come in handy Saturday at the state qualifier.Nursing a sore quad, an injury that occurred two weeks ago, Anderson had no reason to try to jump a higher height once he won the competition at 6-01.
“I wouldn’t get anything out of it,” he said.Anderson won the title after taking second at the small school championship last year with a jump of 6 feet. This year he eased over the bar at 6 feet with no problem.Anderson was one of two county champs for Shoreham along with Kevin Sanders in the 600. As a team the Wildcats finished in fifth place with 34 points. Hills West won the championship. As the league champ and now county champ, Anderson will now focus on reaching the state meet. Last year he just missed qualifying as he finished in fifth place by clearing 5-10.
